Why are my favorite rockers Scots?

I am watching VH-1 Classics this evening. Highly entertaining for this Son of The Eighties. Look! The Outfield! Love them! Del Amitri... can't do better than Del Amitri. The Waterboys, L O V E the Waterboys. Big Country...how ever did they get a guitar to sound like highland pipes? What have these in common? They are all from, or have integral members hailing from, the Land of the Thistle. What is it about Scottish rockers that so appeals to me? I know the literary tradition of Scotland is formidable. Might explain why one infused with that culture would produce poetic pop music.
